Carl Schurz, "A
defender of Liberty and a friend of Human Rights." This statue stands
at Morningside Drive above the park. Carl Schurz, (1829-1906) was once a
friend of Abraham Lincoln, a strong member of the antislavery movement,
journalist, soldier in the American Civil War and even a senator and secretary
of the interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes. 'and of course, he
was a great New Yorker after whom is named Carl Schurz park on the East
Side of Manhattan along the East River. |
This view is from
the cliff high above the ground along Morningside Drive along the western
side of the park. To the right you can see the ground below and to the left
are the fortifications which make parts of this area resemble a fort. |
